The José Ignacio International Film Festival (JIIFF), founded in 2011, is a celebrated annual event in José Ignacio and Pueblo Garzón, Uruguay. Known for its open-air screenings, it uniquely blends cinema with the region’s stunning natural landscapes.
The festival presents a mix of international feature films and Uruguayan short films, bridging established filmmakers with emerging voices in cinema. JIIFF actively supports new talent through initiatives such as the JIIFF Lab, aiding fiction feature film projects, and Generación J, aimed at nurturing young Uruguayan screenwriters and directors under 32.
A major achievement in 2025 was JIIFF’s inclusion in the Academy Award® Qualifying Festivals list, making winners of its Short Film Competition eligible for Oscar® consideration.
As it marks its 15th edition, JIIFF continues to be a pivotal platform for cinematic excellence, cultural exchange, and strengthening Uruguay’s presence in the global film industry.
Over the years, JIIFF has premiered numerous acclaimed films. In its 2023 edition, the Audience Award for Best Film was given to “Close,” directed by Lukas Dhont, a moving drama exploring adolescent friendship and identity. The Best Short Film award went to “Exoesqueletos,” reflecting the festival’s commitment to diverse cinematic formats.
JIIFF is committed to nurturing emerging talent through initiatives like the JIIFF Lab, which provides mentorship to directors and producers from Ibero-America. The Pfeffer del Sur Fund, a $50,000 grant, further emphasizes its support for developing fiction feature films.
JIIFF’s recognition as an Academy Award Qualifying Festival enables winners of its Short Film Competition to be considered for Oscars, elevating the festival’s prestige.
Through its exceptional programming and support for filmmakers, JIIFF has become a key platform for cultural exchange and cinematic excellence in the global film community.
