The Platino Awards, officially known as Premios Platino del Cine Iberoamericano, were established in 2013 to celebrate and promote excellence in Ibero-American cinema. The first ceremony took place on April 5, 2014, at the Anayasi Theatre in Panama City. Initiated by EGEDA (Entidad de Gestión de Derechos de los Productores Audiovisuales) and FIPCA (Federación Iberoamericana de Productores Cinematográficos y Audiovisuales), the awards aim to showcase the cultural richness and artistic achievements of Ibero-American cinema on a global stage.
The iconic award statuette, designed by Javier Mariscal, represents a platinum figure of a woman holding the world, with Latin America’s map at its center, symbolizing the region’s contribution to global cinematic heritage.
Held annually between April and July, the Platino Awards honor films produced in the preceding year, spanning 22 competitive categories, such as Best Ibero-American Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay, along with an Honorary Award recognizing outstanding contributions to Ibero-American cinema.
With its mission to elevate Ibero-American cinema and foster cultural exchange, the Platino Awards have become a vital event in the international film industry, celebrating diversity and talent.
