Launched in 1969 by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), TV2 stands as a cornerstone of Malaysian public broadcasting. Initially called Rangkaian Kedua (Second Network), the channel was established to complement TV1, providing an alternative with a focus on entertainment and community-oriented content.
TV2 broadcasts in multiple languages, including Malay, English, Tamil, and Chinese dialects such as Mandarin and Cantonese, catering to Malaysia’s multicultural population. Its programming spans genres like local dramas, reality shows, international entertainment, educational series, and sports coverage. The channel has also embraced HD broadcasting and digital platforms, ensuring accessibility across various technologies and regions.
TV2 has played a pivotal role in showcasing Malaysia’s rich cultural heritage through multilingual programming. Its inclusion of dramas in Cantonese, Hokkien, Tamil, and Mandarin has fostered representation and unity among the country’s diverse ethnic communities.
In the 1980s, TV2 gained popularity for airing Cantonese and Hokkien dramas, resonating with the Chinese-speaking audience. Over the decades, its content expanded to include international shows, documentaries, and locally produced series. It continues to offer special programming during cultural celebrations like Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Chinese New Year.
Beyond Malaysia, TV2 broadcasts to neighboring regions, including parts of Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, extending its cultural and entertainment influence.
In 2019, TV2 transitioned to HD broadcasting and became accessible via the digital platform myFreeview, enhancing viewer experience and reaching broader audiences.
TV2’s dedication to multilingual content, cultural diversity, and technological advancement has cemented its position as an essential pillar of Malaysia’s broadcasting landscape for over five decades.
