The Alcalá de Henares Film Festival (ALCINE) is a celebrated short film competition, founded in 1970, and held annually in November in Alcalá de Henares, Madrid. Recognized as one of the most significant short film festivals in Spain, ALCINE has hosted renowned directors like Álex de la Iglesia and Alejandro Amenábar.
The festival began in 1968 as an “Amateur Film Competition” organized by the Alcalá de Henares City Council. It evolved in 1970, under the “Antonio de Nebrija Cultural Club,” to promote and honor Spanish short films. Starting with 8 mm and Super-8 mm formats, ALCINE grew to include 16 mm and 35 mm films.
In 1980, it was renamed the “Alcalá Henares Film Festival” and gradually specialized in showcasing short films, including animated and video productions. ALCINE collaborates with key institutions like the University of Alcalá and presents prestigious awards, such as the “Ciudad de Alcalá” and European Short Film Competition awards.

The introduction of awards like the “Pantalla Abierta” by the University of Alcalá in 1988 and the adoption of its iconic “ALCINE” acronym in 2001 elevated its stature. Despite challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, the festival successfully adapted with limited editions and online screenings.
ALCINE features numerous awards, including the National Short Film and European Short Film Competitions, which honor achievements in sound, screenplay, editing, acting, and special effects. The festival also highlights new directors and independent films through competitions like “Pantalla Cero” and “Pantalla Abierta,” offering audience awards to celebrate emerging talent.
