The Woodstock Film Festival is an annual celebration of independent cinema, spanning towns in New York’s Hudson Valley, including Woodstock, Saugerties, Rosendale, and Kingston. Established in 2000, the festival has gained recognition as an Oscar-qualifying event for Live Action Short, Animated Short, and Documentary Short categories, making it a key platform for innovative storytelling and emerging talent.
Renowned for its “Maverick Awards,” the festival honours excellence across categories such as narrative features, documentaries, shorts, cinematography, and editing. Past honorees include luminaries like Ethan Hawke, Alejandro González Iñárritu, and Susan Sarandon. In addition to screenings, the festival features concerts, workshops, and panels, drawing filmmakers and enthusiasts from around the world.
The festival also promotes community engagement through year-round initiatives, including independent film screenings and its Youth Film Lab, fostering a vibrant film culture in the Hudson Valley.
The Maverick Awards are central to the festival, celebrating achievements in filmmaking. In 2024, My Dead Friend Zoe, directed by Kyle Hausmann Stokes, won Best Narrative Feature, while Porcelain War by Brendan Bellomo and Slava Leontyev took Best Documentary Feature for its stunning visuals and emotional depth.
The festival honours significant contributors to cinema through its Honorary Maverick Award. Notable recipients include Ethan Hawke (2022) and Roger Ross Williams (2021), recognising their influential roles in narrative and documentary filmmaking.
Celebrating its 25th anniversary in 2024, the festival featured 39 narrative features and 34 documentaries, including 13 world premieres. It continues to support diverse voices and innovative storytelling, solidifying its status as a premier event in the global film industry.
