The Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (YIDFF), established in 1989, is Asia’s first international documentary film festival and one of the longest-running documentary festivals in the world. Held biennially in Yamagata, Japan, it was created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yamagata City’s founding and to promote the documentary genre within the region.
YIDFF is renowned for its diverse programming, which includes the International Competition, New Asian Currents, and Perspectives Japan sections. These categories highlight a range of innovative and thought-provoking works, showcasing the richness of documentary cinema globally.
The festival also features retrospectives, special invitation titles, and the Yamagata Film Criticism Workshop, which fosters dialogue and critical analysis among emerging film critics. The Yamagata Rough Cut! program provides a platform for works-in-progress, supporting filmmakers in developing their projects.
